BBBAAAAAWWWWW is the sound they make…. that's descriptive enough, right?

Category Archives: Final Fantasy

I’ve been reading through the FFVII Letters today, and quite frankly I’m annoyed at them.

I’m annoyed for a couple of reasons, the least of which, as I mention on twitter, is that I’m really tired of FFVII. I love the game, don’t get me wrong. I remember the day we got FFVII and our PlayStation broke the same day. I remember the first time I powered my way past the Midgar Zolom because I didn’t know about getting a chocobo. I cried when Aeris died, and I still call her Aeris because that’s what she was called back then.

I don’t deny that it has its place as a culture point of reference. FFVII was a groundbreaking game, and is a memorable game. I enjoy replaying it from time to time. And as a Final Fantasy, if people want to put that on the top of their lists, I’m fine with it – I disagree, I think FFVI is the better game, but I get it.

FFVII was important in opening up the world of gaming – it was no longer just this isolated world that happened in arcades or basements, that was seen as isolating. It was bigger than that. And something in it definitely speaks to the idea of Video Games can be Art.

No one who considers themselves a gamer today has not been effected by FFVII, either directly of indirectly. But like all things, it has a time and place. It has its weaknesses, and there are plenty of those.

Again, I will stress that I don’t deny the importance of FFVII. But I do think we should recognize that great things have come after FFVII, and that ideas in FFVII did not all originate there.

Every list has one of these, so why should mine be any different?
Well, I suppose in the name of being different, I could let it slide, but NO. NO!
I want to write a goddamned honorable mentions list to my Top 10 Co-Dependency List.

So, here it goes, the guys that could have made it on my list if my list had more than 10 slots.

Sometimes it’s a good thing that pretty much no one reads this blog. It means I can leave certain favorites out of lists and no one gets upset about it, so I don’t have to qualify the obvious omissions of certain moody Final Fantasy characters.

However, this is still my blog, and I still want to defend myself, so I’m going to pretend that someone said: “Why didn’t you include [x-character]?! He’s the BESTEST GUY OMG!!!!!!!!!”

And I will answer you, voice in my head, oooh how will I answer you.

Day 16

A Song You Used to Love but Now You Hate

The first time I heard this song, during Final Fantasy VIII, I was like “OMG THIS IS AMAZING ZOOOOOMMMMMMMGGGG”

Then I played the game a second time, and well… despite how really pretty the music is, the lyrics are dull and too literal for my taste, and I don’t like Faye Wong’s voice. And I also don’t like the game.

Day 10
A Song That Makes You Fall Asleep

FF4 Piano Collection – Melody of Lute

Final Fantasy 4 Celtic Moon 08 Melody Of Lute

The Celtic Moon version is my favorite.

I don’t think much needs to be said for this song. I love it. I think it’s one of the prettiest songs from the Final Fantasy series, it’s from my favorite game in the series, and is just… lovely. I could listen to this looping for hours, except I’ll fall asleep during it.
Celtic Moon is one of my favorite albums to put on and fall asleep to. It’s atmospheric, moody, and evocative. I close my eyes and envision ballets, and lyrics, and stories set to these pieces. Some are sadder than others, some are bouncy and wonderful. This one I like for being beautiful and happy and a bit of a lullaby, and also a bit melancholy (for the record the first time this song is heard in the game, it is played by Edward, a bard, and a prince, for his girlfriend Anna, who died saving him, and I think the lullaby quality is a perfect tone for a song that’s both a song for saying “goodbye”, and a song saying “I love you”)

Yes, I am a geek. And chances are things are only going to get geekier here on out.
